Hello and welcome back to my series for game week captaincy selection! Each week I will be picking 3 captaincy options for the upcoming game week, broken down as the following –

TOP PICK – The captaincy whom I believe will be the most highly owned and is therefore a risk to go against.

PIPPED AT THE POST – The captaincy which I believe could also haul but may well be a lower EO than we expect.

DARK HORSE – The maverick pick that may have murmurs of anticipation across the community but many will be worried to gamble on.

The picks for game week 6 scored the following points last week –

  • TOP PICK – Cristiano Ronaldo – 2
  • PIPPED AT THE POST – Michail Antonio – 8
  • DARK HORSE – Jamie Vardy – 11

So close to having returns from all 3 picks last week, if only Ronaldo had stepped up to take the last-minute penalty for United rather than his team mate Bruno, who stepped up only to blaze it well over the bar. Certainly, a frustrating moment as a Ronaldo captainer myself… I hate the early kicks off! It was a game in fairness that Manchester United struggled in as Villa put in a very good performance to pick up all 3 points.

Antonio left it very late to win the game for West Ham against Leeds and in doing so, bagged himself the 3 BPS too which took his total to 8 for the week. He now has 5 goals and 4 assists to his name this season! It is fair to say that the man is on fire! At 43% ownership, he punishes anyone who doesn’t own every time he returns.

Vardy was the dark horse pick last week and he certainly delivered on that title. It did not start well for Vardy as he found the back of his own net! But he very quickly made up for it and in the end bagged himself a brace and the 3 BPS, but it was only enough to take a share of the points against Burnley.

Anyway, let’s get down to business and select our 3 captaincy picks for GW7.

TOP PICK – Romelu Lukaku

This is the week that I believe Lukaku’s ownership will rocket. At the time of writing, Lukaku has been brought into 255k teams already and the reason for that is the very tasty fixtures that lie ahead for Chelsea. They face Southampton, Brentford, Norwich, Newcastle & Burnley as their next 5 games! Many players, including myself, will be wildcarding this week to jump on the fixture swings for both Chelsea and Man City (which comes in GW8) in order to either recover ground or try to build on a good FPL season so far.

For me, Lukaku is the prime candidate for captaincy this week and that is coming from a Southampton fan and season ticket holder. Saints have not had the best of starts and although defensively we have improved, Jimenez certainly showed that our back line can be punished as he put our two centre backs on the floor before slotting home. If Jiminez can bully them in this way then just imagine what Lukaku could do, it is frightening isn’t it!

Lukaku has 3 goals to his name so far this season with a xG of 2.17. He certainly isn’t shy of shooting when presented with the chance to do so, taking 15 shots so far this season. He has an xGI of 50% and when (not if) Chelsea score against Saints on Saturday, I fully expect Lukaku to be involved. It is for that reason that he gets the armband for me this week.

PIPPED AT THE POST – Raphinha

Raphinha may seem like a risky pick this week and you may well be right given he has been managing an injury in the last couple of weeks, however he has still bagged 2 x 8 pointers, despite coming off at 66 & 68 minutes respectively in the last 2 appearances. With Bamford injured and likely missing until after the international break, Raphinha will once again have to step up and provide the attacking output that Leeds need in order to beat teams.

I think Watford could be the perfect team for Raphinha to exploit this weekend. They have an xGC of 10.1 so far this season and are yet to keep a clean sheet. I cannot see them doing so against this Leeds side… for me it is simply a matter of how many Leeds could score. Raphinha in the last 2 weeks, whilst carrying a knock, has 2 goals, taken 8 shots and picked up 16 FPL points. Not bad at all for a player with a limp at present.

If there was a week to take a punt, particularly if you do not own Lukaku, then this could be the one and I would be putting my armband on Raphinha if I didn’t own Lukaku myself. Personally, I will be disappointed in he doesn’t pick up a double digit return this week.

DARK HORSE – Chris Wood

Chris Wood is not a player that I would normally be putting forward for this, but he is the perfect dark horse this week. Burnley come up against Norwich this week, who have lost 6 on the bounce and conceded 16 goals in the process as the worst defence in the league to date. I cannot see Norwich improving any time soon and a dogged Burnley side with the like of Wood & Barnes coming up against their back line could see them ship a few more this weekend.

Yes, Wood only has 1 goal to his name so far but going up against this Norwich side, he could easily add to that tally. Yes, he would be a very brave punt but if you have a spare transfer this week before potentially wildcarding next week then I certainly would not put you off going for Wood as a 1-week punt.

So, in summary, my picks are as follows –

  • TOP PICK – Romelu Lukaku
  • PIPPED AT THE POST – Raphinha
  • DARK HORSE – Chris Wood

Get those teams locked in and good luck for the week!
