Hello and welcome back to my series for game week captaincy selection! Each week I will be picking 3 captaincy options for the upcoming game week, broken down as the following –
TOP PICK – The captaincy whom I believe will be the most highly owned and is therefore a risk to go against.
PIPPED AT THE POST – The captaincy which I believe could also haul but may well be a lower EO than we expect.
DARK HORSE – The maverick pick that may have murmurs of anticipation across the community but many will be worried to gamble on.
The picks for game week 4 scored the following points last week –
- TOP PICK – Cristiano Ronaldo – 13
- PIPPED AT THE POST – Mo Salah – 8
- DARK HORSE – Diogo Jota – 3
It is fair to say that Cristiano Ronaldo started his campaign off with a bang. 2 goals and a man of the match performance in front of the home crowd had fantasy managers either jubilant that they brought him in, or frantically tinkering to try to manipulate him into their teams for the upcoming game week. As you read further, you will find out if he makes the picks for GW5.
Liverpool dominated Leeds for much of the game which was marred by a horrific injury for young Harvey Elliot and I of course wish him a speedy recovery. However, if Mane had found his shooting boots a lot earlier in the game or lifted his head to play in his team mates, then both Salah & Jota could have been looking at considerably larger hauls! I am not a bitter owner of both at all…
Anyway, let’s get down to business and select our 3 captaincy picks for GW5.

Salah once again sits top of the pecking order in my captaincy selection for the week. Now it may seem a little dull, but I genuinely believe he is the standout option this week and if you own then it would take a brave call to go against him. Yes, they play a Crystal Palace side who just beat Spurs 3-0 but prior to that they had conceded 5 goals in 3 games and looked somewhat leaky at the back. Salah now has 3 goals and 2 assists to his name this season and looks hungrier than every to impress. He also scored in their action-packed Champions League win an I can only see one scenario this weekend, with Salah being on the scoresheet!
This season he has an xG of 2.7 for those interested in the stats and an xA of 1.74, which indicates a player who is more than likely to return again this weekend. The injury to Harvey Elliot could have an impact on the combination between Salah & TAA and Klopp will have to find a way to ensure that that partnership on the right remains fruitful, but inevitably Liverpool have the players to make the different in Elliot’s absence. I would be disappointed if Salah comes away with anything less than a double-digit return, but in the game of FPL you just never know. I will be putting the armband on him this week, but will you be?
PIPPED AT THE POST – Romelu LukakuEmbed from Getty Images
Lukaku makes his way into my captaincy article this week. Yes, Chelsea go away to Spurs, but I just have the feeling that Lukaku will bully that Spurs centre back partnership this week and get himself on the scoresheet once again. We saw with our own eyes how quickly Spurs crumbled in the 2nd half to Palace and although they had gone down to 10 men, Palace were the better team for the most part. Spurs have difficulties at the back with injuries and suspensions, so it will be interesting to see how Nuno sets them up with Chelsea as the opposition. We all know the powerhouse that Lukaku can be and he ran Arsenals back line ragged earlier in the season. I don’t think this weekend will be any different.
Lukaku has 3 goals to his name and an xG of 1.89 so far this season. His ownership is steadily on the rise and come game week 7 when Chelsea’s fixtures turn for the better, Lukaku will be the name everyone wants leading their FPL front lines! If you are willing to take the risk this week then it could bring high rewards!
DARK HORSE – Patrick BamfordEmbed from Getty Images
Bamford comes up as my dark horse this week. There were rumours of his hamstring ‘pinging’ during the week after the clip from 606 went viral across the FPL Community, but it appears as though Bamford’s fitness is not in question for the Friday night trip to Newcastle. He may well only have 1 goal and 1 assist to his name. However, Leeds have had a very difficult start playing Manchester United, Everton & Liverpool in their first 4 games. Now Leeds see a brilliant up turn in fixtures between now and game week 15 and I personally will be on the triple up of Leeds assets from this weekend.
Bamford has an xG of 1.38 and he looked sharp against Liverpool, he was just unfortunate that both VVD & Matip were on their A-game. With Raphinha feeding balls into Bamford’s path against a very ropey Newcastle side, I get the feeling that both could do very well this week. Newcastle have by far and away the worst xGC at 10.5, having conceded 12 goals in their first 4 games his season. If there is a team to target at present, for me it is Newcastle and I expect Leeds will want to put their start behind them and kick start their season on Friday night!
So, in summary, my picks are as follows –
- TOP PICK – Mo Salah
- PIPPED AT THE POST – Romelu Lukaku
- DARK HORSE – Patrick Bamford
Get those teams locked in and good luck for the week!
