Hello and welcome back to my series for game week captaincy selection! Each week I will be picking 3 captaincy options for the upcoming game week, broken down as the following –
TOP PICK – The captaincy whom I believe will be the most highly owned and is therefore a risk to go against.
PIPPED AT THE POST – The captaincy which I believe could also haul but may well be a lower EO than we expect.
DARK HORSE – The maverick pick that may have murmurs of anticipation across the community but many will be worried to gamble on.
The picks for game week 3 scored the following points last week –
- TOP PICK – Michail Antonio – 11
- PIPPED AT THE POST – Son Heung Min – 10
- DARK HORSE – Harry Kane – 1
A far better week in terms of captaincy selections last week, with both the preferred picks picking up double points returns. Antonio continued his rich vain of form, taking his total to 40 points after only 3 game weeks! 4 goals and 4 assists sees him 10 points ahead of his nearest challenger in Mo Salah at the top of the FPL rankings. Son produced his 2nd 10 pointer of the season, rewarding those who began with the Spurs man even though the saga with Kane was running on in the background. Now that the Kane situation has been resolved and the front man is staying with Spurs, the partnership between the two could well evolve into the points cauldron that it was last season. If it does then following game week 10, I expect a lot may go for the double up.
We are also finally at the end of an international break that also saw the transfer window shutting. During that window we saw 2 BIG names returning to the Premier League. Of course we know about the Lukaku signing given Chelsea got their business done early in terms of their star man, but Manchester United surprised us all with the recruitment of their returning star man, one Cristiano Ronaldo. I have no doubt we will be taking about him a lot this season!
So, lets get down to business and select our 3 captaincy picks for GW4.

Ronaldo has returned to Old Trafford and the media have not stopped talking about it! It had initially looked as though Ronaldo would be heading to the blue side of Manchester, but after a few phone calls with Rio Ferdinand & Sir Alex Ferguson, that deal quickly switched over to the red side and Ronaldo signed with United not long after. He has been away with Portugal during the international break, broken the all time international goal scoring record before getting booked for showing us all his abs, which allowed him to return to Manchester early.
United play Newcastle at home this weekend and it feels like the perfect homecoming for Ronaldo. In the 3 games played for Newcastle so far, they have conceded 8 goals and are 2nd only to Arsenal for expected goals conceded. If United can find the same shooting boots they wore against Leeds at the start of the season then this could be the golden start for CR7 to get off the mark. There has been debate as to whether he will start for United but after training this week and given he is always at peak fitness, surely OGS will start him in front of the home crowd? For that reason, Ronaldo gets my top pick this week! It is just a case of finding a way to get him into my team now…
PIPPED AT THE POST – Mo SalahEmbed from Getty Images
Mo Salah plays Leeds away this week at 16:30pm GMT on Sunday. Both teams enjoy an attacking style of football and I personally think there will be goals in this one. There is the ongoing debate with FIFA about whether the Brazilian players can feature for their clubs this weekend, following the resistance to allowing them to leave for international duty. However, at the time of writing this doesn’t seem to have been resolved. I can’t imagine the clubs will bow down to FIFA in preventing those players from featuring this weekend, but we shall see.
Salah bagged another goal last week after slotting home the penalty in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea. That now takes Salah’s total to 30 points after 3 weeks with 2 goals and 2 assists to his name. Liverpool no go into a run of 3 fixtures which should all be winnable and if Liverpool are on the ball, they could put some of these teams to the sword. Arguably, Salah is possibly the best captaincy option for the next 3 weeks, or at least up there amongst the top 2. If he continues as he has started then there is every chance he can get up to 60 points after 6 weeks! Leeds have an expected goals conceded of 5.8 in the 3 games played which sits them 4th worst, however that stat is somewhat scewed by the early mauling they had in GW1. But Liverpool are certainly one of those teams who could replicate the demolition that United gave to Leeds and for that reason, Salah is my ‘pipped at the post pick’ this week.
DARK HORSE – Diogo JotaEmbed from Getty Images
Finally, Diogo Jota comes up as my dark horse this week. After Klopp confirmed that Firmino will miss the trip the Leeds this weekend and there are fears that he could also be unavailable for the home tie against Palace in GW5, Jota becomes an even better option that he already was. He already has 2 goals to his name in the first 3 game weeks and I would expect him to start whilst Firmino is out. Jota is exactly the type of player who could look to get in behind the Leeds defence this weekend and there is a reason why so many have been flocking to him following the Firmino injury news. As part of the front 3, I feel Jota will be heavily involved and I would not be surprised to see him outscore Salah/Mane this weekend, given he often does when on the field with the 2 of them as he tends to take up that central role, allowing Salah & Mane to dominate the wings and cut back in.
I personally feel that my two transfers this week will be Bruno & Ings out, with Ronaldo & Jota coming in and I feel that will be a popular duo in many teams this week too.
So, in summary, my picks are as follows –
- TOP PICK – Cristiano Ronaldo
- PIPPED AT THE POST – Mo Salah
- DARK HORSE – Diogo Jota
Get those teams locked in and good luck for the season! Thanks for reading!
