Hello and welcome back to my series for game week captaincy selection! Each week I will be picking 3 FPL captaincy options for the upcoming game week, broken down as the following –

TOP PICK – The captaincy whom I believe will be the most highly owned and is therefore a risk to go against.

PIPPED AT THE POST – The captaincy which I believe could also haul but may well be a lower EO than we expect.

DARK HORSE – The maverick pick that may have murmurs of anticipation across the community but many will be worried to gamble on.

Points scored in Gameweek 15

  • Salah – 6
  • Top Pick – Cristiano Ronaldo – 2
  • Pipped at the Post – Son Heung Min – 13
  • Dark Horse – Callum Wilson – 9

So last week’s pipped at the post & dark horse picks both outscored Mo Salah, but Ronaldo failed to perform to the heights that I expected, although not without trying. Son managed to get himself a goal and an assist against Norwich and proved why I preferred him as an asset over Kane, even though I was a Kane owner myself for a prolonged duration.

However, Spurs assets will likely need to be sold after a Covid outbreak has closed the training ground, postponed their Europa Conference tie and very likely will mean postponements to both the Brighton & Leicester games too.

Callum Wilson continued to attempt to drag Newcastle free from the clutches on the relegation spots after his only goal sealed a crucial 1-0 win against Burnley, closing the gap further on the pack ahead of them. It’s just a shame that their fixtures are now woeful between now and new year! The January window is going to be crucial for them, that’s for sure.

Now we move onto Gameweek 16 and what will be a 18:30 UK time Friday evening deadline after Sky have chosen to show Brentford vs Watford as their preferred Friday night fixture!

TOP PICK – Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo was incredibly unfortunate to not be on the scoresheet against Crystal Palace last time out, with United’s 1-0 win not exactly telling the whole story. Ronaldo had 5 shots against Palace, with 4 in the box but through a mix of dogged defending and poor finishing, he failed to get on the scoresheet. Man United looked a far better outfit under Rangnick’s preferred 4-2-2-2 system and it even brought out the best in Fred which says a lot about the playing style and early influence that Rangnick has had on his squad of players.

Ronaldo, amongst plenty of others, got a full rest from the Champions League mid-week which means he should be fresh and ready to fire against Norwich this weekend. Again, this shows that Rangnick isn’t afraid to make calls that the players may not agree with, given I can’t imagine Ronaldo was too pleased with not even being a part of the squad for the home UCL tie. This isn’t a decision I imagine OGS would have made and I expect Ronaldo would have started against Young Boys had he still been in charge.

Opponents Norwich conceded 3 against Spurs, allowing them 17 shots on goal in the process. They may well have enjoyed playing it around the back against Spurs’ counter attacking style, but I don’t expect Man United to allow them the time to do so given the pressing style of play and this should lead to plenty of chances against a pretty poor Norwich defence.

For all of those reasons, Ronaldo would be my top pick and arguably is a better option than Salah this week. The question is, are you brave enough to give him the armband?

PIPPED AT THE POST – Michail Antonio

Now, I write this prior to West Hams tie against Dinamo Zagreb so I am unaware if Antonio will be starting that one, but I would be surprised if he does so, given West Ham have already qualified for the latter stages of the competition. If he does and he pulls his hamstring, you can ignore the rest of this analysis!

My choice in Antonio may be a surprising one given he is now on a run of 6 games without a goal. However, in that time West Ham have scored 12 goals and are certainly not short of chances created. It feels like it is only a matter of time before Antonio is back in on the action and with the fixtures now turning for the better with a very nice run for a prolonged period of time, it could well be a good time to get back on the Jamaican forward.

In the last game, West Ham beat Chelsea 3-2 at home and were certainly good for the win, even if Mendy gave them a helping hand along the way. They now face a Burnley side who are struggling and conceded 19 shots to Newcastle last weekend, it was just a shame Newcastle only managed to hit the target 4 times with them. Given the wealth of attacking talent that West Ham have at present, I am expecting them to put a few past Burnley this weekend and I am calling it now that Antonio breaks his current drought.

DARK HORSE – Bernardo Silva

My final choice for a points haul this week is Bernardo Silva. The man has been in red hot form since game week 8, scoring 6 and assisting 2 along the way. He is comfortably Man City’s top midfielder some 30 points ahead of 2nd placed Gundogan and within the squad he is matched only by Cancelo who shares the same total of points for the season so far.

Silva was rested mid-week alongside the likes of Dias, Cancelo & Rodri in order to ensure Pep can keep his players fresh for the tough winter fixture pile up. This showed me that Silva is currently incredibly important to City’s success and it’s a surprising one given it was widely reported that they were happy to sell him last summer. He has certainly proven why they shouldn’t!

Bernardo scored twice last week from his 3 shots and could well have had more against Watford had it not been for some wastefulness in the final 3rd from many of the front men at the weekend. Wolves will provide a more resolute defence at the weekend but I feel City will have too much for them and Silva will inevitably be involved in everything good from City going forward.

I only wish I could afford him this week, but other required moves have pushed that back until next week at least sadly.

So, in summary, my picks are as follows –

  • TOP PICK – Cristiano Ronaldo
  • PIPPED AT THE POST – Michail Antonio
  • DARK HORSE – Bernardo Silva

Get those teams locked in and good luck for the week!
