Hello and welcome back to my series for game week captaincy selection! Each week I will be picking 3 captaincy options for the upcoming game week, broken down as the following –

TOP PICK – The captaincy whom I believe will be the most highly owned and is therefore a risk to go against.

PIPPED AT THE POST – The captaincy which I believe could also haul but may well be a lower EO than we expect.

DARK HORSE – The maverick pick that may have murmurs of anticipation across the community but many will be worried to gamble on.

The picks for game week 2 scored the following points last week –

TOP PICK – Mo Salah – 3

PIPPED AT THE POST – Bruno – 1

DARK HORSE – Kevin De Bruyne – 0

Well that went well didn’t it… or not! Last weeks premium picks and our dark horse all failed to deliver! Salah scored but it was given offside and Bruno remained in Jack Stephens pocket for much of the game. In fact, I am not sure he has been found as of yet, OGS might need to send out the search party! KDB’s fitness let him down and he didn’t feature at all in GW2 and at the time of writing, has been ruled out of GW3 as well! Let’s hope we get to see him post the upcoming international break. However, although the premiums filed to deliver there were still some great scores across the community thanks to both Liverpool full back delivering double points hauls, the Antonio/Benrahma partnership collecting 28 points between them and forwards such as Ings& DCL bagging some goals. I finished on 82 points in game week 2 and find myself around 60k at present. Far better than that 3.5m that I was at during this very stage of last season.

Anyway, enough about me… Lets look at this week’s captaincy picks for you all to ponder. Fair to say there are plenty of candidates this week.

TOP PICK – Michail Antonio

Antonio has been a man on red hot form so far this season, bagging 3 goals and 3 assists in his first 2 games and collecting 29 points in FPL so far. He is slowly climbing the ownership figures, with him sitting at 40% at time of writing. That means that 60% of teams are still not moved by the fact he looks to be a man on a mission this season! With Crystal Palace & Southampton up next, I have no doubts that we will continue to see returns from Antonio as we move forward.

Antonio has had 6 shots on target in the 2 games played, scoring 3 of them. His xG is up at a massive 2.76 and his expected goal involvement is 81% currently after the first 2 games which shows how pivotal he has become in this West Ham side.

West Ham play a Palace side who haven’t really got going so far this season. They have an expected goals conceded (xGC) of 2.0 and I certainly feel 2 will be the minimum target that West Ham have in their minds going into the game this weekend. With Benrahma, Fornals & Bowen all playing exceptionally well so far, this has only enhanced Antonio’s prospects and whilst West Ham are as free flowing as they are, I expect them to continue to really take the games to teams and my prediction for the game this weekend would be 3-1 West Ham. For that reason, I fancy Antonio to be amongst the goals again and he becomes my top pick this week.

PIPPED AT THE POST – Son Heung Min

Son Heung Min has had a price rise this week and now sits at 10.1m in value. I personally don’t own him and he is the player I fear the most this week. Plenty will be putting the armband on him and their reasoning only enhanced by the fact that Harry Kane has declared that he is staying at Spurs for at least this season. Essentially Daniel Levy refused any bid that City came in with for Kane and now he finds himself looking at the prospect of leading the line for Spurs this season rather than City. We shall wait and see how that pans out over the coming season.

But we all know from last season that with Kane in that squad, Son, who is already a great asset, becomes an even better captaincy prospect. Without Kane so far, Son has had 7 shots in his first 2 games and scored the winner against City in game week 1. However, at times service has been limited and he has found himself drawn out wide and looking for the ball. Tottenham weren’t at their best against a dogged Wolves side but somehow found themselves coming away with another 1-0 win thanks to a Dele Ali penalty. This would have no doubt been a kick in the teeth to owners, who would have expectSon to be on penalty duty whilst Kane was absent. I do now expect Sons output to be even greater though now that he can run on to Kanes’s through balls and flick ons, rather than trying to provide a focal point himself. There were slight doubts about his fitness, but he featured for the final 20 minutes of the Europa Conference qualifier so I believe he should be fine to feature this weekend. Fair to say I am worried as a non-owner. My prediction for the weekend would be 3-0 Spurs.

DARK HORSE – Harry Kane

So the saga is over and Harry Kane has now declared that he will be staying put at Spurs this season. It looks as though Levy’s stubbornness and the fact that Kane signed a ridiculously long contract has led to Kane staying put this summer at the very least. During the last 2 weeks, Kane has saw a 0.2m price drop and now sits at 12.3m. This is still quite a sum of money to outlay Kane, especially with the emergence of Lukaku as a premier league player again so a decision will have to be made on whether you punt on the Spurs talisman moving forward. At the time of writing, Kane sits at a very low 7.8% ownership which has to surely be one of the lowest ownership percentages he has had at this stage of a season before. I fully expect it to rise in the coming weeks.

Kane feature for 70 minutes in the 3-0 win in the Europa Conference League qualifier and bagged himself 2 goals in the process, so it looks as though he hasn’t lost much sharpness whilst missing out over the last 2 game weeks. I fully expect Kane to start this weekend against a Watford and that will give himself every chance to get off the mark in the premier league and put to bed the Man City saga… for now. I won’t be tearing my team up to get Kane in, but if you are wildcarding this week then I wouldn’t put you off going with him this week.

So, in summary, my picks are as follows –

TOP PICK – Michael Antonio

PIPPED AT THE POST – Son Heung Min

DARK HORSE – Harry Kane

Get those teams locked in and good luck for the season!
